I was itching for a monthly adventure again after a relatively quiet September. The children were all busy daily with their revision for the year end exams. Though always tempting to drag them away for a while, I was pleasantly surprised at their levelheadedness in saying they needed the time to prepare.
How the Trip Came to Be
My Companion So with nothing to plan for the family during this period, I decided to bring along the only one who did not have exams to prepare for. The youngest one. I was a little apprehensive about how he will cope with this climb.
Where We Decided
Gunung Arong was always on my radar, however I decided to put it off for another time, as it was further to get to. I searched around and since I have not found the opportunity to visit Kota Tinggi and the surroundings, I decided to head there and try the closest mountain to it, Gunung Panti.
Gunung Panti is a gem, located in the state of Johor. Standing at 531m, it is a perfect retreat for adventurers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts alike. It has lush flora and fauna, a trail which provides some challenge and after reaching the summit, provides a great view of the surroundings. It sounded like it would be an unforgettable experience, so it was decided.
Getting There
The Journey Begins: Getting to Gunung Panti
We set off at 0530h in the morning to beat the traffic and we were fortunate to do so. The journey took us to the town of Kota Tinggi, where we stopped to fuel up for a the morning’s exertions. Okid Kopitiam provided an old school traditional menu of half-boiled eggs, butter kaya toast and hot coffee. Milo for the little one.
From there, it was a short drive to the trailhead. The journey itself is a scenic delight, as you'll pass through quaint villages and lush countryside, setting the stage for the natural wonders that await.
The Trail
After finding the trailhead and parking the car. It was a short walk alongside a cultivated patch of trees on the right to the trailhead. From there, the ascent, though challenging at times, is manageable for most fitness levels. As you ascend, the path takes you through a diverse array of ecosystems, from dense rainforest to rocky outcrops, providing ample opportunities for nature enthusiasts. It is suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers, but still offers enough challenges to keep things interesting.
The Stream
Just minutes in, we reach the first stream. Crossing it was not difficult with the makeshift bridge and rope set up by the others, but provided a fun obstacle course for the little one.
Way-Finding
The first 45min to Checkpoint 1, was a steady, gradual ascent. This part was definitely easy and gave time for the little one to be familiar and look out for the markers which highlighted the trail for us. Allowing him to be in front; teaching and encouraging him to wayfind; kept it fresh and exciting for the both of us for most of the way.
Flora and Fauna
As you venture deeper into the rainforest, we were definitely surrounded by a diverse array of flora and fauna. Towering trees, vibrant orchids, and exotic ferns create a vibrant tapestry of colors.
The forest floor was home to giant sized creepy crawlies including this up-sized millipede.
While we did not spot any fauna, they were definitely present with the constant calls of the gibbons floating over the treetops
The Trail Steepens
From Checkpoint 1, the trail steepens and the physical demand is harder for the next hour or so. After 2 hours, we reached the most exciting part of the climb. The summit of Gunung Panti is a rocky outcrop which required a scramble up using roots, ropes and even the ladders prepared there. For the short, little one, this was nature’s equivalent of the local indoor gyms.
His verdict: Better than any indoor climbing gym!
The Summit: A Panoramic Reward
After a couple of hours, we reached the summit of Gunung Panti. There was a breathtaking view of the lush expanse of rainforest stretching as far as the eye could see. The sea of tress was interrupted only by the occasional peak of a neighboring mountain. This is a moment to savor, a reward for your efforts.
The Journey Down and the Reward
It was always important to have a goal; an aim; the reward to look forward to at the end of the climb. Both for the adult and the young one. In this case, lunch was a fantastic recommendation at Restoran Sin Mei Lee. The mutton soup was piping hot, packed with full herbal flavour and tender mutton chunks, The calories were worth the climb.
Remember to check this place out if you are in the area of Kota Tinggi.
